Raccoon Deterrents

Raccoons show up around your home for a very good reason. Usually it’s because there is prime access to food. They will seek any kind of leftover scraps thrown in your garbage, and will chow down on any pet food left unsecured. When you consider raccoon deterrents, you might be surprised that the best way to keep those critters away is to secure your trash and pet food. Cut off the supply of food and you’ve already done most of the work required to discourage freeloading raccoons.

Outside of that, the best way to deal with a raccoon issue is to humanely trap and remove them, and then seal up your home. Call the professionals at AAAC Wildlife Removal to get these critters out of your hair!

What’s that? You want to know if there are repellents known to work well on raccoons?

Well, here’s a couple suggestions. But, if they don’t work out, make sure you give us a call so we can get the job done right!

Hot Pepper Repellent

Raccoons have an excellent sense of smell, and they don’t care for the scent of pepper. You can make a liquid pepper repellent that may ward off your raccoons Here’s the pepper repellent recipe:

  • Get a jar of hot sauce or some cayenne pepper.
  • Fill a spray bottle with water and then add the hot sauce or pepper.
  • Mix the combination, and later add a couple of drops of fluid dish soap.

Spray this solution around the edges of your garden if you have a greedy raccoon trying to nab fruits, vegetables, or flowers.

The intense pepper smell should discourage any raccoon from spending much time around your yard or garden.

Their noses are very sensitive and they don’t like strong spices. Also consider spraying this around your garbage cans for some extra dissuasion.

This solution will wear off after a few days, so you will need to reapply early and often to keep it effective.

Onion and Pepper Repellent

So we know raccoons hate peppers. But what if we added in some onions to the stew? That will make an even less appetizing smell for your furry bandits. Here’s the recipe:

  • Grab a kitchen pot and add a ½ gallon of water
  • Add 2 tablespoons of cayenne pepper, one diced jalapeno, and one diced onion
  • Bring to a boil
  • Let steep for 20 minutes

After that, remove the pepper and onion, then fill up a spray bottle with the remaining liquid.

Just like last time, spray this around the borders of your garden and nearby your trash can. The intense smell may ward off your raccoons.

You will need to re-apply every few days, or after it rains.

If you are really struggling with raccoons, it’s likely that these measures won’t be enough.

They require a lot of re-applications (multiple times per week), which makes it very difficult to stay on top of.

Consider contacting AAAC Wildlife Removal to remove your raccoons for good, so you don’t have to keep fending them off.
